Stop Trying to Boil the Ocean – 3 Tips For Successful SMB Digital Marketing!
Digital marketing for SMBs can be overwhelming and challenging. Daphne and I have talked to a lot of business owners over the past year+ and we’ve seen a lot of similarities across them all. This is my first attempt to begin summarizing our thoughts. I’ll be posting more in the days and weeks ahead. For now, here are 3 Tips For Successful SMB Digital Marketing.
1) Know Your Audience
One key mistake we see SMBs making is thinking that “anyone” or “everyone” is your buyer. Larger companies may be able to appeal to a wide market, but the saying, “the riches are in the niches” is valid for a reason. A niche is where you’ll have the most leverage as a small business. And in order to develop a niche and appeal to buyers within the niche, you must understand their pains, problems, triggering events, and priorities.
Take some time to think about your potential customers. What is pushing them to make a purchasing decision? What does it look like if they succeed? Knowing these things will help you craft messaging that resonates and helps make a compelling case for your solution.
Start by thinking about your existing customers and who you’d like to work with. Then, create a buyer persona in order to start the process of getting into the head of your ideal client. Defining the different personas will make it easier for you to craft your message and properly target the right audience.
2) Focus On Your Value Proposition
If there’s no difference between you and your competition, then there’s no reason why a buyer would be compelled to work with you. Your value proposition is what differentiates you from others in your space and makes it easier for your prospects to know that that you’re the provider to go with. What do you do better than anyone in the industry? What makes you unique? Taking the time to think this through and properly convey it will set you apart from others in your niche.
3) Stay Focused On Specific Goals & Objectives
If you’re exploring the world of digital marketing, you’ll notice that there are plenty of different directions you can go in. It’s tempting for local business owners to try and do it all at once – you know, “hug the whole elephant” or “boil the ocean”. It’s easy to take on too much and then wonder why you’re not getting the results you expect.
Instead, take a step back and identify your goals and where the biggest opportunities will be realized. Focus on executing effectively on one or two key objectives before moving on to additional efforts. Digital marketing is a lot like building a house. You need to have a solid foundation to build on. Assess the effectiveness of your website and the activity around your social media campaigns. Are they helping or hindering you as you work to achieve your goals? It’s best to Invest the time and energy towards very specific goals/strategies and then expand your efforts rather than doing everything haphazardly and not getting the results you desire.
